The Apartment on Avenida de Roma transforms a former medical practice into a home for a couple with children who wished to return to the neighbourhood where they grew up. Located on the historic Avenida de Roma, at the heart of Alvalade, the project engages with the modernist legacy of the 1930s, a period when this part of Lisbon was conceived as a model residential district for the urban bourgeoisie, guided by the ambition of a modern architecture aligned with a forward-thinking society.
The intervention builds upon the intrinsic qualities of the building and its natural light, reinterpreting the experience of living in a 1930s apartment through a refined architectural gesture. The project includes two suites, an additional bedroom, a kitchen and a living room, all designed with a minimalist aesthetic where chromatic neutrality, simplicity of lines and bespoke fixed furniture reinforce spatial continuity. A continuous element of light runs across the ceiling between the two façades, illuminating the social areas and guiding the eye towards the living room, where natural light enhances depth and creates a welcoming atmosphere.
Materials such as white marble and solid wood play a central role, giving the apartment character and identity while maintaining an understated elegance. In the more intimate areas, large stone slabs reveal the uniqueness of their veining and emphasise the authenticity of the material. The renovation of this apartment symbolises the residential renaissance of central Lisbon, reflecting the contemporary movement of returning to the city and the ongoing appreciation of one of its most emblematic avenues, Avenida de Roma.
