The Loft on Calçada do Cardeal project proposed the full renovation and functional transformation of a former two-storey industrial space into a loft-style residence, located in the historic district of Alfama, in Lisbon, next to the National Pantheon. The intervention sought to create a unique and distinctive real estate product with an intimate sense of refinement. The project draws upon the memory of the pre-existing structure, reinterpreting original elements such as the circular pillars, the concrete flooring and the large openings, while transforming the space into a hybrid dwelling defined by its double-height ceiling and the absence of interior walls, where natural light becomes the central protagonist.

The loft features a monochromatic intervention with white walls and polished concrete flooring, contrasted by the richness of walnut wood and black marble used in the bespoke built-in furniture that defines the functional organisation of the space. The ground floor is dedicated to the social areas – living room, kitchen, dining room and office – with adaptable and retractable furniture elements, such as the kitchen counter and dining table, promoting multifunctionality. The upper floor is occupied by a master suite (adaptable into a second bedroom) that opens visually onto the central social space.

This project establishes a new urban and cosmopolitan spirit, symbolising a luxurious contemporary way of living in the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, emphasising simplicity and materiality over excessive ornamentation.
