The project emerges from an ontological inquiry into the essence of dwelling, where architecture refuses to be a mere functional envelope, constituting itself instead as the art of pausing time and establishing a sense of permanence in the world. It comprises a collection of 45 single-family residential units (ranging from 2 to 4-bedroom typologies) immersed in the vernacular landscape of Estremoz, grounded in a mnemonic commitment between the memory of the place and the timelessness of poetic space.
Rather than a disconnected formal repetition, the tectonic layout establishes a rigorous mediating device between the private eidos and the territorial scale. The phenomenological autonomy of dwelling is safeguarded by the intentional introversion of form: private courtyards and water clearings act as axes of interiority and sanctuary, where natural light operates as the revealing substance of the architecture itself.
The materiality, expressed through the gravity of locally quarried natural stone, the syntactic truth of timber, and the transparency of glass, manifests the primacy of substance over appearance. On the ground floor, the phenomenological continuity of the social spaces blurs the boundaries between the interior and the open courtyards, founding a realm where utility and tectonics transcend their instrumental nature. This project thus establishes a new paradigm of contemporary habitability in Estremoz—a topos where the density of dwelling meets the dignity of silence and place.
